CHALLENGE

Say that you’re in a fitting room of a popular clothing retailer and realize that the clothes you’ve selected and tried on are too big for you or the colors of the clothes don’t match you as well as you expected. It’s a hassle to exit the fitting room only to come back and try out the clothes again, right?

If you’re lucky, you might be able to get a shop assistant to get the clothes for you. But the assistant might forget a thing or two that you requested or bring clothes that you didn’t request. All in all, you’ll still probably end up in situations where you need to go out of the fitting room and bring the clothes back yourself.

SmartFit Assist was designed to solve these problems.

RESEARCH

We conducted a survey of 159 college students to identify the design needs to address the challenge.

Q. What are your main reasons for using a fitting room when clothes shopping?

Q. Which of the following aspect(s) is inconvenient for you when using a fitting room?

From the above results, we concluded the following:

  • People usually use fitting rooms to confirm the size and design of the clothes.

  • Most fitting room users find it inconvenient to go back to bring different clothes if the clothes don’t fit them or the color doesn’t match.

Based on the above two conclusions, we determined that we should focus the design of the shopper's application on allowing the shopper to select different size or colors of the clothes that the shopper wants.

RAPID STORYBOARD

After the team had determined where the focus of SmartFit Assist should lie, I proceeded to draw a rapid storyboard so that the team could visualize what the final product would look like. By this time, we had realized that there needed to be a convenient way for the clothes shopper to communicate with the shop assistant. That is why we decided to build two interacting, separate applications: one mounted on the wall of the fitting room for the shopper, and the other for the shop assistant to receive the shopper’s requests through some mobile device.

CONCEPT STORYBOARD

4. The shop assistant will soon bring the requested item to you in the fitting room.

1. An item you’ve brought to the fitting room doesn’t fit you.

2. With the mounted device, scan the bar code on the item and proceed to choose a different size or color of that item.

3. The shop assistant will then receive information about the requested item.

WIREFRAMES & WORKFLOWS

We realized that the shopper might be bored while waiting for the shop assistant to find the clothes and bring them. Thus, we added features into the shopper’s application to allow the shopper to watch trailers or other video clips while waiting. Also, at the bottom of the application, we added a feature which allowed the shopper to see the progress of the shop assistant in locating and bringing the clothes to the fitting room.

LEARNINGS

I Liked The teamwork for this project was great. Each team member productively worked on her assigned part. And even after we had finished our assigned parts, we continued to make each other’s part better by giving feedback and refining the product.

What If The shopper had a way to communicate with the shop assistant directly through the shopper’s application?
